Mohammedan Sporting, one of the 'big three' of Kolkata football, have been sidelined from the spotlight since they were relegated after the 2013-14 season. But the club seems intent on getting back up, with the way they have recruited for the upcoming season.

With the 2nd Division League set to take part as a shorter-format tournament, with the winner going directly into the 2020-21 season of I-League, MDSC have built a team designed to bring them the trophy.

The club, under a young new administrator Wasim Akram, turned heads when they signed Willis Plaza, the Trinidad and Tobago intenational who has scored 29 goals in the I-League for Churchill Brothers over the last two seasons.

Signing a rising star like Yan Law to helm the side is a further marker for their intent to challenge for the title; perhaps not just in 2nd Division but in the I-League as well.

The club wanted to start practice sessions in August ahead of the 2nd Division League's potential commencement in September but their plans are facing uncertainties due to the lockdown measures implemented by the West Bengal government. Still, the club officials are in talks with the authorities to obtain permit to hold practice sessions within the next one or two weeks. To convince them that practice can be held safely at the Mohammedan Sporting Ground, they have installed a 'sanitizing panel' in the club premises; becoming the first football club in India to adopt such a safety measure.
