Mizo footballers step up to aid those affected by Coronavirus lockdown

RECENTLY, THE CORONAVIRUS reached Mizoram when a person returning from abroad tested positive for Covid-19.

With the presence of the virus and the state under lockdown with the rest of the country, some of the leading people in Mizo society have come forward to aid the people being impacted by the current situation - economically or otherwise - including some of the famous footballers from the state.

Chennaiyin FC forward Jeje Lalpekhlua, who missed out on the entire 2019-20 season due to an injury and a subsequent surgery to fix it, has decided to come forward and form the 'Jeje 12 Fund' to raise money for the people in Aizawl and the rest of Mizoram whose livelihoods have been affected by the ongoing lockdown.

East Bengal midfielder Lalrindika Ralte, too, has been in touch with his friends to stay updated about the situation back home. He reportedly has sent a substantial sum of money back to his family to help out the neighbours who are suffering due to a lack of income and resources in the current situation.

The suspension of most public transport has hit Mizoram hard; since citizens in remote areas are finding it difficult to access stores, hospitals and other crucial services in nearby cities. Due to football being the most popular sport in the region, footballers stepping up in helping the relief efforts is likely to draw the attention of others, encouraging them to join in on the initiative, boosting the collective effort.
