DAYS AFTER MOHUN BAGAN lost their opening match of Calcutta Football League 2019, their arch rivals East Bengal have done the same.
The Red and Golds played George Telegraph at their own stadium in front of a near capacity crowd. They started well but as the game went on George Telegraph exerted more pressure to take control of the midfield and created multiple chances.
The match remained goalless going into added time but at the 93rd minute Justice Morgan finally got the goal that George Telegraph had been looking for all afternoon, giving them a huge victory over the heavyweights at their own backyard.
This win has taken George Telegraph to the top of the league table with 9 points from 3 matches, followed by Bhawanipore FC who are on 7 points from 3 matches.
Interestingly, both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are at the bottom two of the league table, with 0 points from 1 match apiece.
Both the top division clubs have been rotating their squads heavily as they participate simultaneously in the Calcutta Football League and Durand Cup. It remains to be seen if this continues to result in lack of form for them as the season goes along.
