INDIA SCORED A CRUCIAL victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when they defeated Australia by 36 runs.
Batting first, India made the most of The Oval's wicket, putting together a formidable 352/5 in 50 overs. A stormy knock from Shikhar Dhawan (117 off 109) assisted well by Virat Kohli (82 off 77) and Rohit Sharma (57 off 70) carried the innings, despite the best efforts from Pat Cummings (1/55), Nathan Coulter-Nile (1/63) and Marcus Stoinis (2/62, 7 overs).
In reply, Australia gave the chase their best. But in the end they could only get to 316. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/50), Jasprit Bumrah (3/61) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/62) led the containment efforts from India's side. Steve Smith (69 off 70), David Warner (56 off 84) tried to put up the resistance, but even a late blistering innings from Alex Carey (55 not out off 35) was not enough to see the Aussies past the finish line. They fell well short.
