This was the second leg encounter between these two clubs. The first encounter in Colombo ended in a goalless draw.
Here, after a goalless first half, Chennaiyin FC slowly raised the intensity of their attacks until Colombo FC's resolute defence ultimately buckled, allowing Jeje Lalpekhlua to find the net.
This goal was Jeje's 13th in AFC competitions; he scored his first 12 goals in Asian club competitions for Mohun Bagan.
With this win, Chennaiyin FC have qualified for the group stage where they will take on Minerva Punjab FC (3rd April home, 19th June away; both matches in TransStadia, Ahmedabad), Dhaka Abahani (30th April home, 15th May away) and Manang Marshyangdi Club (17th April home, 26th June away).
