Rajasthan Royals have roped in renowned and experienced coach Paddy Upton for the forthcoming Indian Premier League season. Upton has outstanding credentials and has been closely associated with Rajasthan Royals in the past. He was the Head Coach for four years, wherein the Royals made it to the semi-finals in the 2013 edition, sensationally pushing its way forward from the bottom of the heap, and also reached the finals of the Champions League (2013). The Royals won 13 straight home matches under him, a feat that stands the test of time in the IPL.
When it comes to T20 leagues, Upton’s experience and insights are invaluable. He has guided and mentored several teams across the globe, be it in IPL, Big Bash or Pakistan Super League. As coach of Sydney Thunder for four years, his success is well charted. Under him the Sydney Thunder made a dramatic turnaround in their fortunes. From finishing with a wooden spoon for three previous seasons and enduring a 19-game losing streak, Sydney Thunder went on to win the 2016 Big Bash League title.
As someone who has represented South Africa in rugby, attained a Masters’ degree in Sports Science, worked as Strength and Conditioning Coach, Mental Conditioning coach to professional athletes, Sports Psychologist and Performance Consultant to cricket, hockey, soccer, rugby teams across the globe, Upton has a deep rooted understanding of sports and professional athletes and the nuances associated with it.
“The experience and knowledge that he brings to the table is unparalleled. As coach, mentor and scientific trainer, Paddy Upton is well versed with the rigours of modern day sport. We are thrilled to have him back in our team and can’t wait to put on our pads and get going in the new season,” said Zubin Bharucha, Head of Cricket, Rajasthan Royals.
His biggest achievement came with the Indian national team, as mental conditioning coach, when he combined with head coach and compatriot Gary Kirsten to guide India to 2011 ODI World Cup title and World No.1 rank in ICC Test rankings. Upton has also held the position of Performance Director of South Africa Cricket from 2011-2014, when South Africa became the first cricket team to hold the World No.1 ranking in all three formats of the game (2012). In 2018, he was inducted into Australia’s Deakin University as a Professor of Practice at its Business School. His role includes creating free online coaching courses for people with an interest in building their career in sports coaching.
“It gives us immense pleasure to announce Paddy joining the team. We welcome him back to the Royals Family. Paddy is someone who is well versed with the culture of Rajasthan Royals and he knows what it takes to achieve success in international sport at the highest level. We cannot wait for the season to begin and are so pleased that the BCCI have confirmed it will be held entirely in India,” said Manoj Badale, Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals.
