Gokulam Kerala FC release striker Antonio German

AHEAD OF THEIR crucial match against East Bengal, Gokulam Kerala FC have released their star striker Antonio German.

German, who played for Kerala Blasters in the past, joined Gokulam Kerala for the 2018-19 season as the Kozhikode-based club made a serious bid for the top division league title.

After making appearances for GKFC in all 6 I-League matches they have played so far, Antonio German has 2 goals to his name. The news of his release comes at a crucial juncture in the season; a win against East Bengal on Saturday will place Gokulam Kerala FC in the 2nd place in the league table, in the thick of the title race.

Earlier today the club released a statement confirming the decision,

"Gokulam Kerala FC has parted way with forward Antonio German. The former QPR forward and Grenada international was with the club from the start of the season. He started all the six matches for Gokulam and scored two goals. The player requested to cancel the contract due to personal reasons and has left for United Kingdom.

“It was a nice experience with Gokulam Kerala FC and I wish the club a bright future. I thank Kerala fans for wholeheartedly supporting me. The fans have been excellent throughout the season,” said Antonio.

'Antonio German is a good team player and his immense experiences in playing European leagues have helped us to perform well this season. It was altogether a different experience working with him. We wish Antonio success in his future career,' said Bino George."

This comes a day after German himself announced his departure from the club on Instagram, saying he "wasn't happy with certain things."

Gokulam Kerala FC are on 9 points after 6 matches, 5th on the league table. The club finished 7th last season, and ahead of this season went through a major overhaul to project itself as a title contender in the top division league. After East Bengal they are scheduled to face Real Kashmir, Indian Arrows and Aizawl FC before flying to Coimbatore to face current league leaders Chennai City FC.
