CFL 2018 -- East Bengal, Mohun Bagan score crucial wins, go neck to neck in title race
THE CALCUTTA FOOTBALL LEAGUE this season has become a roller coaster ride already with a fierce battle unfolding at the top of the table.
With Mohun Bagan being held by Peerless dropping points for the first time earlier last week, their arch rivals East Bengal immediately took the opportunity to re-assert themselves in the title race, setting up for a delicious weekend of action.
On Saturday, East Bengal took on Techno Aryan and it was a resounding victory for the Red and Golds. With Kassim Aidara, Laldanmawia and Mahmoud Al Amnah finding the mark, a 3-0 win put them briefly on top of the CFL points table. Watch the whole game here...
But on the very next day Mohun Bagan re-took the throne with a 3-0 win of their own, against Tollygunge Agragami. Dipanda Dicka, Azharuddin Mallick and William Lalnunfela scored the goals while youngster Pintu Mahata put on a memorable performance to win the Man of the Match award at the sold out Mohun Bagan Ground. With 13 points from 5 matches, Mohun Bagan are back on top of the table. But East Bengal can still catch them up with one more win, having 10 points from 4 matches, and an advantage in the goal difference.
Last season both rival clubs were tied in points and goal difference, with East Bengal winning the league thanks to scoring more goals. This time, with the two top division clubs going neck to neck in the local league, chances are high that the upcoming Kolkata Derby on 2nd September will serve as a title decider clash.
