La Liga: Should Barcelona Let Go of Andre Gomes?

ANDRE GOMES joined Barcelona in 2016 when he was just 22 years old. Before playing for the Catalans, He played a vital Midfield Role at Valencia having played almost every game over the course of 2 seasons. Before joining Valencia, Andre Gomes played for Benfica where he won the domestic treble.

When Barcelona approached Valencia with an interest to buy Andre Gomes, there were a lot of other clubs already in line to buy the young Portuguese player, one of them being their Arch Rivals Real Madrid. As things turned out, Gomes ended up signing for Barcelona, surprisingly snubbing Real Madrid for whom his National Team Captain Cristiano Ronaldo and then Real Madrid Player Pepe play. Initially, Football pundits termed this Transfer as a good deal for Barcelona, but that was not to be.

What Has Gone Wrong for Gomes at Barcelona?

It has not been smooth sailing for Andre Gomes since he has signed with the Blaugranas. He has not played up to his potential and not as good as he was at Valencia. He has failed to Link up with likes of Messi, Suarez and Andres Iniesta. He has missed Sitters and it looks like that he is just not fit for Barcelona’s style of Play.

But he has also shown shades of Brilliance. In a match against Osasuna in the league, last Season Gomes put on a master class at the Camp Nou and scored two goals. That was the highest Barcelona had paid over 60M euros for. This Season, It seems like Gomes has started to find his feet at the Camp Nou. Ernesto Valverde has shown immense trust in him and expects him to deliver in terms of performances.

But the Big Question is whether Barcelona should get rid of him in the Summer Transfer window?

According to the La Liga analysts at TFG, Getting rid of Gomes now would be a terrible mistake. He is a type of player to go to another team and just turn into a world-class player and Barcelona would be the ones ruing his Sale.  Let’s Consider Sergio Roberto’s scenario in 2015. Sergio Roberto is a year older then Gomes and is a La Masia Product. In 2015 Barcelona was about to let him leave the club due to the lack of Playing time and him not fitting into the Barca’s System. Somehow, Sergio Roberto stayed and now he is one of the most sought-after players in the transfer Market. He is someone who can play both at RB as well as at a Midfield position. Barcelona Renewed his contract and he has a Release Clause of over 500M Euros.  It took Sergio Roberto, who is a La Masia Product years to settle and get used to Barca’s style of Play.

For a player of Andre Gomes Caliber, it would be fair to say that he should be given a little bit more time and Patience. Gomes is a player who has the potential to become one of the best Midfielders in the World. With a little bit of time and trust, Barcelona certainly has a Gem in their hands and it would be Foolish if they let go of him.
