ISL 2017-18: David James returns to Kerala Blasters as head coach

KERALA BLASTERS HAVE GIVEN the fans a blast from the past by appointing David James as their head coach for the rest of the season.

KBFC recently parted ways with their head coach Rene Meulensteen, and had appointed assistant coach Thangboi Singto as stop gap head coach. They didn't take long to find Meulensteen's successor, indicating that the management had seen this possibility coming.

David James was an accomplished goalkeeper during his playing days, earning 53 caps for England and playing for several clubs in the Premier League clubs including Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth. In 2013 he became a player-coach at Luton Town, a fourth division club in England. He joined KBFC in 2014, at the inaugural edition of ISL, as a player-manager.

He played 12 matches in KBFC colours and under his coaching the franchise won 6 out of 17 matches. They managed to finish 4th in the regular season, and lost the ISL final to ATK.

His appointment has given the KBFC fans something to smile about early in the year after a dreadful start to the season where the team has only earned 7 points in 7 matches, and is in desperate need for rejuvenation.
