I-League 2017-18 -- Sanjoy Sen announces resignation after Mohun Bagan's loss to CCFC

SANJOY SEN HAS RESIGNED as Mohun Bagan head coach after the Mariners lost at home to Chennai City in I-League 2017-18 today.

Sen, who became the head coach of the Mariners in the 2014-15 season, got instant success as under his coaching the club won the top division league title after 13 years. Next season he followed that up with a Federation Cup win. In the 2016-17 season, Mohun Bagan lost the I-League by 1 point to Aizawl FC and went down in the Federation Cup final.

In charge at Mohun Bagan for the fourth season running - the longest spell by any coach in the club's recent history - Sen's Bagan team suffered multiple setbacks winning only 2 of their first 6 matches and drawing other games. There was wide speculation that he would be let go if the Mariners failed to beat Chennai City tonight.

At the press conference after the match, Sen declared,

"This is the end of the road for me... it is my personal decision."

The club has reportedly been in talks with two potential coaches with significant top division experience in India - Santosh Kashyap and Ashley Westwood. But there is a section among the club's supporters who believe Sen's assistant coach Shankarlal Chakraborty should be given the reins as the new head coach.

The club management has not yet commented on Sen's reported resignation, and whether it has been accepted, or who they favour as his successor at the club.
