India Learn Golf Week Strikes a Chord with Aspiring Indian Golfers

THE INAUGURAL India Learn Golf Week (ILGW), aone of it’s kind initiative to grow and spread the game in the country, which got underway amidst much enthusiasm and support across the 27 participating clubs and 15 cities of India on 25th September, concluded on 1st October, receiving massive response across venues, particularly from young aspirants.
 
The nationwide initiative saw highest participation in cities like Pune, Panchkula, and Jaipur, while places like Kolkata and Lucknow also saw people come out in numbers in spite of the festival period to play golf.
 
The ILGW saw golf clubs tie-up with schools in several places in order to promote the game amongst youngsters.
 
Kiran More, former India cricketer and Chairman of the BCCI selection committee was among those who took the PGA beginner lessons at the Panchkula golf club.
 
The Hamoni Golf club in Gurgaon organized a pay and play tournament for juniors to give them real-time experience of tournament play and put into practice golf course etiquette's. At Pune’s Oxford golf course, coach Lawrence Brotheridge of the famous David Lead better Golf academy imparted lessons, making the week a successful and enriching experience for the learners. ILGW also saw participation from top corporates and a special clinic was organized for IIT students to learn golf at the Golden Swan Country Club in Mumbai. Bhubaneshwar Golf Club organized special golf clinic for KISS students as a part of the ILGW. 
 
ILGW broke age barriers effectively as kids beginning with a 4-year old participant at Panchkula was the youngest participant while a 67-year old retired school teacher in Gurgaon was the oldest to enjoy the beginner’s lessons at the golf courses.
 
The prediction from the annual organization of the ILGW is INR 1500 crores of additional golf revenue to the industry in the next five years, given 100,000 new golfers are targeted to be initiated to the game through this.

Devang Shah, President, GIA said,

“Our first edition of India Learn Golf Week went off extremely well. I would personally like to thank all the participating clubs for showing huge amount of enthusiasm and to all the people who came out in bug numbers to support the initiative and participate in the sport of Golf. Looking at the success of the inaugural edition, we look forward to a much bigger second edition in 2018."

Rishi Narain, MD- RNSM was delighted with the success of the event and said,

“This was our first ever initiative of this scale and we are really happy with the outcome.  We hope that this becomes an annual fixture and we are able drive even more people to participate in the game.”

ILGW is an initiative of the Golf Industry Association (GIA) in partnership with the Indian Golf Union (IGU),the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI), the National Golf Association of India (NGAI), Golf Course Superintendents and Managers Association of India (GCS &MAI) as well as the globally acclaimed Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America.
