2017 FIFA U17 WC: Honduras Preview– Scoring enough can ensure a good run in the tournament

THE TEAM FROM CENTRAL AMERICA will be participating in their fifth under 17 World Cup. Honduras would want to do well in the group stages to ensure progressing in the next round for only the second time in five attempts.

History

Honduras, in 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, will make their fifth appearance at the World Cup. Their best performance at the World Cup has been a quarterfinals finish in the 2013, when they ended the group stage with seven points. In all of the previous four editions where Honduras have played, they have always finished with a negative goal difference.

Qualification

In 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, Honduras went through the group stages with seven points and the second place meant progressing to the Classification stage. In the next stage of the competition, Honduras met United States of America and Cuba in single-legged league format. Here two countries of the three would qualify for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, topper going into the finals of the CONCACAF.

A 1-7 victory against Cuba and 0-3 loss to U.S.A. ensured World Cup qualification for Honduras but also meant bowing out of the CONCACAF.

Player to watch

Carlos Mejia: Predominantly plays on the left flank but ends mostly in the forward line. Has a knack of scoring goals and is a good offensive player. With his seven goals, he won the Golden Boot in the recent 2017 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
