CFL 2017: East Bengal continue winning run against Customs as Mitchell scores a brace

EAST BENGAL REGISTERED their second victory on the trot as they overcame Customs at a Calcutta Football League encounter today.

The match, held at East Bengal Ground, began with a slow pace as neither side wanted to throw everything at the game from the beginning. The first half went goalless, and the defending champs came out swinging in the second half.

Carlyle Mitchell, the Trinidad and Tobago international who recently signed for East Bengal, became very active in the second half and often went beyond his defensive role. He put in a few hard tackles as well and saw a yellow card for a foul on Joseph. The game had by now become a faster affair but even with about 20 minutes left it was goalless. At this point EB coach Khalid Jamil began committing more players into the attacks.

75 minutes in, Cavin Lobo sent in across that Mitchell got a free header on. The ball went in and EB had finally broken the deadlock. The assembled fans broke into cheer and breathed a sigh of relief, as East Bengal kept up the pressure to consolidate their victory.

The match went into added time and this time Samad Ali Mallick ran up the right flank, and sent a precise cross into the box. Once again it was Mitchell who jumped up and connected with his head and found the net again. The defender's scoring head had ensured East Bengal a respectable 2-0 victory against a team who were surprisingly competitive against the overwhelming favourites.

This win makes it 6 points from 2 matches for East Bengal, and they are well on their way to mount a challenge for their 8th straight CFL title.
