Sudirman Cup: India keep their hopes alive with a emphatic 4-1 win over Indonesia

AFTER a disappointing outing against Denmark on the opening day, India came back strong to keep their hopes alive in the Sudirman Cup held in Australia.

They defeated Indonesia in an emphatic style 4-1. Apart from the young men's doubles pair of Satwik/Chirag Shetty, all other shuttlers in their respective categories registered victories.

Though Satwik lost his men's doubles encounter, it was his and Ashwini Ponnappa's heroics that put India in the lead. They were up against Olympic champion Tontowi Ahmad and his partner Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. The Indian pair put their opponents under immense pressure after winning the opening game but then they fought back to push the match into a decider.

The final game was a close contest, Satwik/Ashwini looked determined to rectify their mistakes in the opening match and won the match 22-20, 17-21, 21-19.

Srikanth Kidambi too was impressive with his performance in the men's singles contest as he trumped Jonatan Christie in straight games 21-15, 21-16.

Satwik/Chirag lost to Marcus Gideon/ Kevin Sukamuljo 9-21, 17-21. PV Sindhu sealed the deal for India with her straight game victory over Fitriani Fitriani 21-8, 21-19. The score read 3-1 in favour of India with one match remaining.

And finally the in-form duo of Ashwini/Sikki Reddy made it 4-1 with their amazing win over Della Haris/Rosyita Putri Sari 21-12, 21-19.

This win has kept the hopes alive for India. Now all eyes will be on the final tie of the group played between Denmark and Indonesia. The latter team looks weak and may fall short against the mighty Danes therefore a place for India in the knockouts looks likely.
