How Indian MMA fighter Rohit Nair Went to Thailand and won hearts

A couple of months back, Thailand played host to the Amazing Fight Campaign. Conducted as part of preparations for the prestigious World Wei Kru Muaythai, the campaign hosted 20 fighters handpicked from different parts of the world.

The lone Indian presence in the tournament was Rohit Nair. He was chosen to be among these elite fighters that got an all sponsored trip and an opportunity to with Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek.

After a selection process that involved Muay Thai Training techniques and Wai Kru (A war-dance that shows the respect to the coaches, parents and the sport), 16 fighters moved on to the second round of the campaign. Rohit cleared this hurdle with flying colors.

The exposure that the Mumbai-based fighter got was commendable. The whole campaign was pushed by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and on top of this; it was televised all over the nation.

Rohit Nair: Thailand is very good place for those who want to train and enjoy yourself at the same time, many Indian fighters go to Thailand to train. I think those who haven't experienced this should take out some time and do so.

Despite suffering a loss in the semi-final of the tournament, Rohit won hearts. He was selected as the most popular fighter in the tournament when he garnered 14,000 votes and outclassed 19 other fighters to win the accolade.

And he promises that this is just the beginning and thanked the fans that voted for him.

Rohit Nair: To my fans, I want to thank all of them for voting for me and making me victorious. They not only made me win but made our country win on an international platform.

Currently fighting out of the Zen Fitness Studio in Mumbai, Rohit holds an amateur MMA record of 1-0 with his lone fight coming in the YFC. He also boasts a record of 4-0 in Kickboxing at the Zen Warriors Fighting Championship, where he is a champion.

When asked about his message for the Indian MMA fighters, he had the following to say.

Rohit Nair: I would like to say to all the MMA fighters in our country that the competition is not within us. It’s us against the world. We can make improvements together and together, we can become a big name in the world.
