Play-by-Play: Late goal by Sony delivers crucial 0-1 victory to Mohun Bagan over Minerva Punjab

THE HOME TEAM held on for most of the game but it wasn't enough. The Haitian pied piper Sony Norde delivered a knockout blow to Minerva Punjab FC, giving Mohun Bagan a 0-1 win that they could not do without.

A tight game, at one point halted by floodlight failure, saw Minerva Punjab play their heart out to hold Mohun Bagan to a draw. At one point they lost a golden opportunity to go up when Krishna Pandit hit the crossbar. Mohun Bagan were able to create long periods of pressure on MPFC but they were unable to get a goal. Sony Norde and Katsumi Yusa contributed to creating some great chances but in the end all went in vain.

But towards the end of the game, a quick counter saw Sony Norde run the length of the pitch with space to spare and calmly slot the ball past Arshdeep, who had made some great save in the game earlier. That one goal allowed Mohun Bagan to claim all 3 points from this match.

With full points in the bag, Mohun Bagan now have 33 points from 16 matches, same as Aizawl FC. But the Mariners are top of the table thanks to leading the Peoples' Club in head-to-head.

This result sets up next week's match where Aizawl FC host Mohun Bagan as a title decider.

Here's how this nervy, physical game unfolded, narrated in detail via our live commentary...
