Hamstring injury likely to keep Angelo Mathews out of IPL

THE DELHI DAREDEVILS may not see Angelo Mathews as a part of their squad for the majority of the upcoming IPL games as the Sri Lankan all-rounder is yet to fully recover from his hamstring injury.

Mathews has been kept out of the Sri Lankan side that is set to host Bangladesh in a two-match T20 series, starting April 4 in Colombo. It is learnt that apart from a hamstring injury, the 29-year-old has also suffered a calf strain, which might delay his return to DD camp. In an interaction Espncricinfo, SLC cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha stated,

“At this stage I think I can say Angelo will not play the T20s. The IPL will be affected because he has to wait for the physio and the trainer to give him the green light. He has to be 100 percent fit. Angelo has to make that call with the physio, because if he’s not 100 percent fit, we will not let him go.”

Mathews, who was released by DD after the 2015 season, was set to join their camp again this season after the franchise bought him for Rs 2 crore during the IPL 2017 player auction. However, with the Champions Trophy scheduled to kick off in England in June, the SLC is reluctant to release an unfit Mathews. The Delhi franchise will play their opening game of IPL 10 against RCB in Bangalore on April 8.
