R Ashwin’s witty cover up for Farokh Engineer’s gaffe at the BCCI Awards night

WE ARE TIME AND AGAIN reminded that there is no match for Ravichandran Ashwin in the spin department. But, this time around, the India offie has proved that he has no competitor even when it comes to displaying wit and sense of humour.

During the recently held awards ceremony, Ashwin made a classic comment to cover up a faux pas made by former India skipper Farokh Engineer. As reported by PTI, after handing over the Dilip Sardesai award to Ashwin, Engineer asked the veteran spinner,

"What's there in Karnataka water that produces great spinners like Chandra (BS Chadrasekhar), Prasanna and you?"

In response, Ashwin, who hails from Tamil Nadu, covered Engineer’s gaffe and brought the house down with a comic reply.

"Not to bring politics in it but we had some Cauvery water recently in Tamil Nadu! I think it should be that.”

The 30-year-old termed Engineer's speech as the most romantic he's ever heard.

"I have been fortunate enough to be a part of five MAK Pataudi Lectures. We have had Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and our coach Anil Kumble give speeches but none as romantic as the one Mr Engineer delivered today. It's so romantic that it's hissing around this stage. I think every Indian cricketer should learn about Indian cricket. Thank you for entertaining us.”

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who was presented with the Polly Umrigar award, said that he was happy to be amongst the top players.

"I always wanted to be one of the top players in the world, so I understood what it would take to maintain my form in all three formats. I take the captaincy as an opportunity and not as a job. It's a responsibility that I need to do the right things, set the right examples and follow a certain path that the whole team believes in."
