AIFF picks veteran Portuguese coach Luis Norton de Matos for U-17 job

THE NEW HEAD COACH of the India U-17 national team is Luis Maria Norton de Matos, a former Portuguese striker and a veteran coach.

The 63 year old Benfica youth product played top division football for almost two decades and earned 5 caps for his national team. He has been active in coaching for the last 30 years. 

In his coaching life he has worked at multiple prestigious clubs including managing Atletico de Portugal and the Benfica B team. He even served as the head coach of Portugal U-21 national team for a while.

Matos will assume his role as the India U-17 head coach on short notice after his predecessor Nicolai Adam parted ways with the team following allegations of "physical and mental abuse." AIFF picked Matos out of 75 applicants, many of whom hold high profile coaching jobs in the footballing world.
