Play-by-Play: ATK succumb to late Forlan strike, Mumbai City go top of the table

MUMBAI CITY STRUCK against the run of play to clich a crucial one-goal victory against Atletico de Kolkata at their own home ground to re-claim the top of the points table.

The match began with ATK very much in charge, keeping more of the ball and making repeated attacks, but MCFC were making some threatening counters that indicated that they could strike back too. Mumbai defenders were putting in a hard shift, with Lucian Goian leading the back four, heavily marking Iain Hume and making blocks all over the place.

Despite multiple chances being created, the first half ended goalless. The second half saw the game slow down as fatigue took over, and at one point it seemed like the match was heading towards a goalless draw. But then 79 minutes in, a great piece of dribbling by Sony Norde saw him beat Arnab Mondal and send a cross that took a touch off Prabir Das and reached Diego Forlan. Forlan's shot went straight into the net. Mumbai were leading 0-1.

In the last few minutes MCFC put all bodies behind the ball to defend their lead. But in the last minute of added time ATK came close to scoring through a free kick from just outside the box. Javi Lara sent the ball through the defensive wall and it would have gone in had Mumbai keeper Albino Gomes not made a great one handed leaping save to deny him. That save presered MCFC's lead and ensured that Mumbai City tasted their first win in 5 matches.

With this, ATK have suffered their first defeat in ISL 2016. They are now 3rd on the points table with 9 points from 6 games. Meanwhile, MCFC have re-gained the pole position in the table, with 11 points from 7 games.

Here's how the game unfolded, narrated in detail through our blow-by-blow real time updates...
