"Success is never guaranteed but we'll always keep trying," says a proud Sunil Chhetri after historic win

CAPTAIN SUNIL CHHETRI, hero of the historic victory that Bengluru FC achieved last night, appeared proud and joyous after the game as he addressed the media.

Happiness and excitement boomed from his voice as he upheld this win as vindication for all the efforts his team has put in, rather than taking credit for the brace. He elaborated,

"To be honest I'm just happy right now. I can't sum it up as to what it means for Indian football. I'm just really really happy. There was a lot of talk about no Indian team having reached the AFC Cup final before but trust me when the coach talked to us before the game there was no mention of that. We were just trying to win a game and be better than our opponents JDT. And thankfully we did that... when we started this tournament it was all about taking one game at a time, not thinking about reaching the final. And that's what we did tonight. We beat JDT over two legs which was not easy, and now it's all about the final."

Speaking of the tight-knit performance delivered by the boys, the skipper said he expected nothing less from his players as well as the fans in the stadium,

"I don't want to sound bossy or over-confident but I wanted my team to be like this. Everyone from the head coach to the staff everyone puts in a lot of hard work on our matchdays... the team was top notch tonight, and by team I don't just mean the players but also the crowd who were fantastic, it wouldn't be the same without them."

Referring to his club as 'family', Sunil spoke about how everyone who was part of the Blues contributed towards the success,

"What makes us good is that everyone associated with this club, from the CEO Mr Parth Jindal, to the head coach, the players, the ball boys... everyone wants to work hard. We're happy with what we have achieved till now, we don't know what we will achieve tomorrow but we will try hard all along. It's a very close-knit family, and that's what we are all about."

Speaking about what went right this time that after something of a 'goal drought' over the last 3 games the floodgates opened and BFC scored 3 goals, he said,

"Goals will always come eventually. But there's no guarantee. You can play really well and still not score. But the most important thing is to stick to the plan and keep trying. I missed an easy chance in the second half that 8 out of 10 times I would have buried. But this time it went out. All we can do is keep trying. As a player I want to score two goals every game but doesn't happen. I can only try and I'll keep trying and so will my team."
