Zico: Maybe nothing is going for us right now; Materazzi:Came in with a whole new mentality

With the first win of the season, Chennaiyin FC and Materazzi were ecstatic CFC coach Materazzi made a lot of changes to his line up and noteworthy was the exclusion of Jeje. Speaking on that he said,

"When someone is left out I also feel sad because I know what it means being a player and I know everybody wants to play all the games… But what matters today is that we won, so congratulations to the guys"

Chennaiyain have had defensive problems that have not allowed them to keep clean sheets in the opening two games. But after the last performance he says his defence line has proved their capability and said,

“Last week I said it was my fault, and you know it’s not only the defence but it is the whole team that makes the game. We came in with a whole new mentality and what I told my players is that if we put the heart in, the will, the hunger, then we can win. If not then we are not the same team and we can be at the bottom of the table"

The Gaurs, on the other side, now sit at the table's bottom and it is not a pleasant place to be in foe the runners up. Zico, on his side's performance commented,

"I think it was a game of quite a few opportunities. Chennai had three chances and scored twice. We also had a few chances… Maybe nothing is going for us right now but we will work hard to rectify this.”

He continued,

“Of course, I am not happy. In the first season we got only five points from the first round. But we got into the semi-finals. This is just three games and nothing is lost.”

The CFC head coach does keep his word on not handing the team's win or loss on individuals. That was the reason he started Jerry, the left back, who gave away the penalty in his first appearance in the league. Praising his hard work on the night Materazzi said,

“I have great consideration for Jerry because during training sessions he works hard, he fights, so he deserved it, so I am also saying that players who work hard and train hard irrespective of their nationality or their height, and I am saying who deserves to play, plays and if he keeps performing like this then he will play again.”

Brazilian Zico took the place some excuses on things which are not relevant after 3 games in the league, said,

“After all the problems that happened after last season, we lost key players we wanted to retain like [Jonatan] Lucca, Pronay, Hoakip, who got better offers. But we have to play with the best we have”

Materazzi, on the sub-par performance by FC Goa in this season, felt for then team and said it was a long season and things could change soon for any team. Further said,

“If you remember last year NorthEast after two games were on nil points and more or less even Mumbai City, but you can’t forget Goa is a very good team and three losses don’t mean that they are out"

At half time, FC Goa marquee was replaced. The reason when asked to Zico replied,

"He picked up a knock during the Pune City game and he felt it again today and so he was substituted at half-time”

On the mention of not having the players he referred to, in his previous comment, a question was posed asking whether he had given the approval of all of the new singings, he said,

“Some signings I didn’t know. Even I signed my contract on the deadline. But I have no problem with it. The club has all rights to sign whom they want.”
