His ability to keep things simple and his relentless quest to score runs quickly earned him rich accolades, fanfare and adulation. 

Over the years, the attacking opener created fear in the minds of the finest bowlers in the world and on occasions made a mockery of fielding positions. Although criticism for his shoddy foot-work and reckless shots was inevitable, Viru did well to ignore his detractors and in the process won innumerable matches for India. To quote Sehwag, ‘I did it my way.’ 

One of the fiercest, opening batsmen of the modern era has decided to bid adieu to the game. While it has come as a surprise to many with a touch of sadness, it is important to celebrate a wonderful, impactful and most importantly, a non-controversial cricketing career.
