Heard on the Stands: Atletico Madrid to end partnership with Atletico de Kolkata

WHILE THE LEAGUE STRUCTURE IN INDIA is set to undergo a change, many teams will be looking for sponsorship deals in the background. But Atletico de Kolkata have a different problem to tackle with. Rumour has it that ATK's parent club Atlectico Madrid has cut its ties with the Kolkata based team. ATK who have secured two Indian Super League titles in three years, has been provided with a few Spanish players that have performed well for the team. Even the coaches have been Spanish namely Antonio Habas and José Francisco Molina. This end of partnership could mean ATK will have to look for quality coaching staff and foreign players and this could mean some work.

Reports suggest that ATK are looking towards England to tie-up with well-known clubs in the likes of Tottenham Hotspurs and Liverpool FC. There is a problem in this news. Liverpool FC are already in permanent partnership with DSK Shivajians. They have a residential academy set up close to Pune in Maharashtra. Shivajians play in the I-League and tying up with another team in India will lead to conflict of interests.

About Tottenham Hotspurs, it also seems unlikely to enter into a tie-up for the English club that finished second in the recently concluded domestic league. If the club does manage to find a contractual tie-up with a foreign club, the name also might undergo a change. All of this is still unconfirmed and the contract with Atletico Madrid might see an extension and the name of Atletico de Kolkata also would still stay.
