Play-by-Play: Aizawl are champions of India; equaliser enough to see them through

AIZAWL HAD ALL THE ADVANTAGE COMING into this game as they were three points clear of the title contenders Mohun Bagan. All Aizawl needed was a draw to win the I-League.

Shillong Lajong took an early lead as Aizawl did not look settled early in the game. After a while the composure sinked in the away team's game and they started to hold on the the ball more often looked better when in possession.

Meanwhile, the other game where Mohun Bagan were played Chennai City saw Chennai City scoring first. This meant Aizawl could rejoice if the scored stayed that way. But Aizawl did not want to leave it to chance and Kamo went close to getting the equaliser as he backheeled yards from goal but it was saved at the goal line by a defender.

Another occasion where Aizawl FC scored, the goal did not stand as it was adjuged offside. Aizawl finally scored the goal through William who came on as a substitute. A heart-in-the-mouth moment was when Yuta Kinowaki was involved in the play in the dying minutes and the attempt by Dipanda hit the goal post and went out. After that another effort from the home side saw a header going inches away from the far post in the last play of the day.

But 1-1 was the final score and It did not matter anymore whether Mohun Bagan won or not as Aizawl just needed a point from their game. Aizawl FC were champions of India.
