Cricket to feature in Commonwealth games 2022 if Birmingham wins bid

CRICKET MAY FEATURE in Commonweath Games after nearly 24 years if Birmingham goes on to win the bid to host the mega event in 2022.

According to a report in EspnCricinfo, Birmingham has been invited to bid for the Games by the UK government after Durban, which was originally scheduled to be the host city, was obliged to withdraw due to financial and political issues.

Neil Snowball, Warwickshire chief executive and member of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games bid company, has confirmed the intention to include men’s cricket, too, subject to the agreement of the ECB and ICC. It is learnt that the format will be T20 and the games will be held at Edgbaston and at Worcestershire’s New Road home.

Other than Birmingham, there are also cities from Canada, Malaysia and Australia who are vying to host the mega event.
