Himanta Biswa Sarma elected as new BAI president

FORMER INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS MLA and currently serving as a BJP member, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the new President of the Badminton Association of India (BAI).

He is also the president of Assam Badminton Association. The decision was taken at the executive council meeting on Sunday.

"We are very happy to announce that Himanta Biswa Sarma has been unanimously given the charge to become the acting president till the next elections in 2018. It was a consensual decision. Everyone realises that badminton has to move forward and it will be best served by him," said General Secretary Anup Narang to PTI.

According to the Constitution:

"President shall be elected by the Council among its members and provided that only the outgoing office bearers or the member of the outgoing Executive Committee shall be eligible to contest the election for the post of President."

Late Akhilesh Das Gupta's son Viraj Sagar Das who was elected as the Uttar Pradesh Badminton Association President has been inducted as the Vice-President of BAI.
